"Read, learn and enjoy," is how Trucker Buddy Kenneth "Will" Harrison signs each letter to his class in Naples, Fla.
For the past five years, Harrison has corresponded with the students in Mary Gust’s fifth grade classes, where the teacher nominated Kenneth for Driver of the Month because he has "made a significant impact on several hundred fifth graders" since 1998. "Trucker Will serves as a positive role model of an intelligent mind, a love of education, an excellent writer and communicator."
And she adds, he is "an adult with a strong work ethic."
Olivia is one of the students at New Beginnings School, and she thinks Trucker Will is "probably the best Trucker Buddy in the world." Olivia and her classmates were able to climb inside Harrison’s Kenworth truck, which he drives for Stevens Transport in Dallas, Texas. They were excited to be able to pet his dog, Taffy, who accompanies him when he is away from his home in Dunedin, Fla.
As a result of the praise heaped on their driver, Harrison was selected September’s Trucker Buddy of the Month.
Harrison and nearly 4,000 professional drivers share their time with elementary school classes throughout the world. The only criteria to be a Trucker Buddy is to be a professional driver who is willing to send a post card each week to a class in grades 2 through 8.
Drivers can apply on line at www.truckerbuddy.org, or by calling (800) MY BUDDY.
There are currently more than 90 classes still waiting for a Trucker Buddy for this school year.
Harrison will receive a personalized jacket, along with a check for $300 to spend on the class and $200 in Trucker Buddy merchandise, compliments of TMI-MultiMedia. He will be given a copy of "For the Long Haul" by Donde Publishing as well as an Accident Photo Pak to carry in his truck. The class will receive a CrossCountry USA game from Ingenuity Works, which will help them learn more about how trucks move freight across the nation.
