When United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001, the nearby Shanksville Volunteer Fire Company responded at the scene and spent the next three weeks working long, hard hours on the grim recovery task.
Their dedication moved a Kenworth of Pennsylvania truck salesman to spearhead an effort to help the volunteer fire company buy the new Kenworth T800B fire truck chassis they wanted.
"These fire company volunteers and the town of Shanksville have been through a lot," said Bill Burns, truck sales account manager for Kenworth of Pennsylvania in Carlisle, Pa. "I felt we could help out by putting together a team effort to significantly reduce the costs of their new, 3,000-gallon fire tanker."
Kenworth of Pennsylvania, Kenworth Truck Company and body builder New Lexington Fire Equipment Company in Rockwood, Pa., worked closely with fire company officials to help reduce the overall cost. Other companies and individuals also came forward. The campaign covered part of the cost of the new Kenworth T800B fire tanker and a low-interest loan covered the rest.
"Our fire company volunteers and the residents of Shanksville were just amazed at the overwhelming support we received," said Fire Chief Terry Shaffer of the Shanksville Volunteer Fire Company.
"This truck is dedicated in memory of those 40 heroes onboard Flight 93 who saved countless lives by their brave actions," said Burns. The vehicle includes a plaque to remember those who perished, an American eagle graphic to serve as a tribute, and a large "United We Stand" embroidered tarp that covers the side of the body housing a portable pond assembly.
