DriverNet has introduced a new wireless service for drivers and small fleet owners.

DriverNet pK delivers applications including web-based dispatch management, load finding (through the DAT Services Freight Exchange Network), e-mail, pay settlements, fleet/driver messaging, and routing with HHG miles.
The system combines a HandSpring Visor handheld computer with a Glenayre Technologies @ctiveLink wireless messaging module. The company chose to send data via a paging network because it provides coverage to more than 95 percent of the U.S. population and because of the problem cellular networks have with dropping pieces of data.
If a message is sent to a driver or if a driver sends a message while he or she is not within the coverage area, the system will store the message and deliver it when the driver re-enters the coverage area.
Hardware for the system costs around $500 and messaging is a flat $59.95/month for up to 2,000 minutes.
"We estimate that fleets will be able to save between 25 to 30 percent of the costs
associated with communicating with drivers while on the road with our system," said David Buckley, CEO of DriverNet.
DriverNet offers similar information and services through its web site and through a network of more than 400 kiosks in truckstops nationwide.
