More than 100 diesel big rigs, tow trucks and pickups will converge on the Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Mo., Saturday, Oct. 20, for the first All-Diesel Drags.
The event is coordinated by the Diesel Drag Racing Assn., based in Eldridge, Mo. Some of the vehicles are able to accelerate from a standing start to more than 110 mph in a quarter-mile.
Joe Seaman Jr., Midwest coordinator for the association, races a 1984 Peterbilt. “We have some rigs that are prepared specifically for racing,” he told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, “but most of the guys race in the rigs they use every day on the road.”
The Diesel Drag Racing Assn. has about 250 full-time members across the country and sponsors 13 races.
