DaimlerChrysler AG said that it's talking to worker representatives about cutting nearly 800 jobs -- or a tenth of the work force -- at a Mannheim commercial vehicle plant,
according to Dow Jones and the Associated Press.
The move would affect only the plant's cable activities, which have high production costs, DaimlerChrysler spokesman Othmar Stein said.
Despite the ongoing slump in the market for commercial vehicles, the company isn't eyeing cuts to truck and bus manufacturing at the plant, Stein said.
Stein said it's not yet certain when the talks will end, or how much money the move could save the German-American automaker.
He added that it's also too early to say if the company might shift the cable operations to a region with lower production costs or outsource them to another company.
