Cummins Westport Inc.’s low-emissions L Gas Plus natural gas engine was launched in Dallas, Texas this week at WasteExpo,
the largest solid waste and recycling trade show in North America.
The Cummins Westport L Gas Plus combines the environmental advantages of clean-burning natural gas engines with more than enough power and torque for heavy duty refuse trucks, municipal works trucks, medium duty trucks and transit bus applications.
In addition, the L Gas Plus has a variable geometry turbocharger that provides impressive low-end torque and transient response. Its power-to-weight ratio delivers superior efficiency in many applications.
The L Gas Plus is the latest addition to the Cummins Westport family of "Plus" engines, joining the B and C Gas Plus. The L Gas Plus uses Lean Burn Spark Ignition combustion technology with an oxidation catalyst.
At 8.9 liters, the L Gas Plus offers best-in-class power-to-weight ratio with 320 horsepower (hp) at 2,300 rpm and 1,000 lb.-ft. at 1,400 rpm weighing in at only 1,500 pounds. Along with high performance, the L Gas Plus offers the best-in-class emissions at 1.4 grams per brake horsepower hour of oxides of nitrogen (g/bhp-hr NOx) plus non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC) and 0.01 g/bhp-hr particulate matter (PM).
Relative to the levels required under current US EPA standards, the L Gas Plus produces 40% less NOx + NMHC emissions and 90% less PM emissions.
"The L Gas Plus is the perfect complement to the Cummins Westport product line and we are excited to offer our customers a product with the power required to take on their heavy duty needs above 280 horsepower," said Hugh Foden, president of Cummins Westport. "The L Gas Plus offers the cleanliness and cost effectiveness of natural gas without compromising performance."
