Now that the EPA has certified Cummins' ISX engine as meeting October '02 emissions regulations, the engine maker is shipping engines to truck makers so they can make sure they are integrated properly with their truck models.

The first engines were shipped to International Truck and Engine Corp. Cummins will continue to manufacture and deliver a limited number of engines certified at the new standards to its OEM partners over the next few weeks, as part of a managed introduction ramp-up plan.
"We have been able to ensure that the engines we produce are thoroughly tested and integrated into OEM vehicles as a result of our close working relationships with OEM partners and our consistent product strategy, " said Ed Pence, Cummins Vice President - Automotive Business. "By providing certified engines at this time, we will ensure our customers get a quality product."
Cummins introduced a full product line of on-highway engines beginning in 1997 that were designed to work with cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and began field testing the engine subsystem in December 1999.
