C.R. England is testing 100 side skirts for increased trailer aerodynamics. The tests have already found a 3.6 percent savings in fuel when using the technology.
If the company finds positive results, it will save almost 3 million gallons of fuel a year.

C.R. England performs testing on new technologies on a continuous basis, with a testing department using both controlled and field tests.

"Our overall desire is to operate the most efficient vehicles on the road," said Corey England, executive vice president of operations support. "This strategy protects our environment as well as ensures our future profitability."

As a member of the EPA's SmartWay Transport Partnership since 2005, C.R. England has contributed to reducing fuel consumption by improving aerodynamics. The company put aero profile kits on tractors and adjusted the trailer gap, saving over 134,908 carbon dioxide tons in 2008.

Other efforts to reduce fuel emissions include enhancing fuel mileage by decreasing highway speed, idle reduction, driver training on fuel mileage improvement, energy efficient tires and technological advances to help reduce out-of-route miles.
