“The project in Hinds County, Mississippi, is part of our global growth strategy,” said Nikolai Setzer, Continental’s Executive Board Member for the Tire business. “In a first step the new plant is especially addressing our commitment to grow our commercial vehicle tire business in North America.”

The start date for construction has not yet been announced but Continental expects to break ground within the next several months with the production of commercial tires to start by the end of 2019. Continental will begin site development in 2016 and expects to begin construction of the plant in 2018. The site is nearly 1,000 acres and was chosen because it is well suited for setting up a gradually growing tire plant, according to Continental.

Continental has invested over $1.5 billion in the past five years for manufacturing, technology, facilities and product development in the U.S. The company has used part of the investment to expand its tire plant in Mt. Vernon, Ill., and a new facility in Sumter, S.C.
