Less-than-truckload carrier Con-way Freight said Friday it will implement a general rate increase averaging 4.7% for non-contractual business, effective Oct. 27.

The rate increase will apply to customers on the company’s CNWY 599 tariff.

It will affect general LTL rates, minimum charges, accessorial and other supplemental fees involved in the provision of service for LTL shipments moving within the United States and Canada, cross-border shipments moving between the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada, and the domestic U.S. portion of shipments into Mexico, according to the company.

“The rate increase is intended to help offset rising costs of doing business, including enhanced compensation programs to attract and retain quality drivers, increased regulatory compliance, fleet operations and revenue equipment costs, and technology upgrades which enable the company’s premium service product,” Con-Way Freight said in a statement.

Customers can view the new rates after October 27 on the Con-way Freight website.

Con-way Freight operates a fleet of 8,900 tractors and 25,000 trailers.

The news follows LTL rivals UPS Freight and FedEx Freight earlier announcing rate hikes, taking place on Dec. 29 and Jan 5, respectively.
