Drivers on Colorado's Interstate 70 between Denver and Vail can rest easy thanks to the Colorado Department of Transportation's winter programs that start up this week
. The programs are meant to keep traffic moving and maintain safety on this corridor.
According to the Vail Daily, the state has launched its Heavy Tow Quick Clearance program with the help of American Towing Alliance. American Towing Alliance will clear obstructions and move commercial vehicles to safe locations during winter weekends, holidays and other adverse weather days along Interstate 70 between Floyd Hill and Vail Pass. The program lasts through April.
In addition, the state has started up its chain program, during which truck drivers can purchase snow chains and have them installed along I-70 between Dotsero and Denver, the publication reported.
This year, commercial vehicles exceeding 26,000 Gross Vehicle Weight or vehicles carrying 16 passengers or more will have the option of using AutoSock, a traction control device, in place of chains. AutoSock is a fabric that slips over a vehicle's outer driving wheels, and can be installed over the tire in less time than traditional chains.
The state's current chain law requires a commercial vehicle operating on I-70 between milepost 133 and milepost 259 to carry sufficient chains from Sept. 1 through May 31.
The department will also be providing free roadside assistance along I-70 for passenger vehicles with flat tires, no gas, or other minor mechanical problems, the Vail Daily reported.
