A truck chain plan for I-84 through the Columbia River Gorge developed by Oregon officials last year will likely get its first real test this winter.

According to the Associated Press, as soon as heavy snowfall creates risk, chains will be required on trucks over 10,000 pounds. A series of electronic signs will warn drivers of the chain requirement.
The new policy was put into place last winter, but the mild weather meant they only tried it once, during a December storm.
Oregon State Police Sgt. Richard Morgan told the AP that it's not unusual to find truckers without chains, who when stopped say it's company policy not to chain up.
Oregon officials are coordinating with those in Washington to keep trucks from avoiding the rules by crossing over the Columbia River.
