Contract Freighters Inc. (CFI), a Con-way company providing international truckload services, is buying 140 Cummins 2007 ISX engines with the Cummins particulate filter. The SmartWay-approved engine was selected for its performance
during an over-the-road fleet test.
"CFI joined the SmartWay Transport Partnership to ensure that we're part of a long-term solution toward reducing emissions and fuel consumption from trucking operations," said Herb Schmidt, president of CFI.
With the new Cummins 2007 ISX engine, CFI is now able to leverage a properly specified power train (engine/transmission/axle and tires) and electronic engine settings to maximize overall fuel efficiency and lower emissions. The stand-out engine features are Cummins' patented Load-Based Speed Control, cruise control and gear-down protection, which enables drivers to shift gears at a lower rpm to help optimize fuel consumption.
SmartWay Transport is a voluntary partnership between the EPA and freight industry businesses aimed at reducing emissions of carbon dioxide by 33 to 66 million metric tons and nitrogen oxide by up to 200,000 tons, as well as saving up to 150 million barrels of oil per year.
In October, CFI won its second consecutive U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay Excellence Award based on its implementation of technologies and strategies aimed at reducing greenhouse gases and other emissions from the transportation sector.
