The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) honored Carrier Corp. recently with its coveted Best-of-the-Best Stratospheric Ozone Protection award in recognition of the company's achievements in helping restore
the Earth's protective ozone layer. Carrier is a unit of United Technologies Corp.
The awards presentation coincided with the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Montreal Protocol, which calls for a global elimination of ozone depleting substances such as chlorofluorcarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) used in air-conditioning and refrigeration products.
In 1994, Carrier became the first company in the industry to phase out CFCs from air-conditioning systems worldwide - two years ahead of requirements in the U.S. and 16 years ahead of mandates in developing countries.
Carrier is the parent company of Carrier Transicold, which provides transport temperature control and anti-idling solutions with a line of equipment for refrigerated trucks, trailers and containers, auxiliary power units (APUs) for heavy-duty trucks and transport air-conditioning systems for buses and recreational vehicles.
Carrier Transicold's environmental innovations for the trucking segment include Deltek hybrid diesel-electric refrigeration technology, which has a sealed refrigeration circuit that requires only half the refrigerant of conventional equipment, and the ComfortPro APU, which reduces diesel emissions from idling vehicles.
Best-of-the-Best award nominees were evaluated by the federal Environmental Protection Agency staff and judged by an international panel representing industry, government, and non-governmental organizations.
