The Teamsters local in Boston is protesting General Motor's decision to award car-hauling business to non-union Swift Transportation.
Teamsters car haulers last weekend picketed the auto distribution railyard in Framingham, Mass. GM's contract with union car hauler Allied Transportation ended last Friday. Saturday was the first day Swift drivers started transporting GM cars and trucks throughout the New England area.
Members called attention to the fact that non-union drivers earn approximately half the wages of union drivers and receive no pension or health benefits. Teamsters in the area have been transporting GM vehicles for more than 50 years.
"General Motors is making a big mistake by replacing Teamster drivers," said Mark Harrington, a business agent for Local 25. "Non-union companies don't have the experience or equipment to do the job in a safe and professional manner."
Local 25 will continue its "informational picketing" and is contemplating a boycott of GM cars and trucks.
