A proposal that would allow truckers in Canada to drive 14 hours a day is being heavily opposed by a union representing 30,000 truck drivers
.
According to The Toronto Sun, the union is calling the proposal, being considered by all provinces, "a collision course with tragedy." Teamster leaders say many truckers wouldn’t be able to handle the one-hour increase, and are asking the limit to be reduced to 12 hours a day. The protestors made their opinions known at a protest earlier this week in downtown Toronto.
"Drivers should not have to earn a living by working in an unsafe manner," said Wayne Gibson, a Teamsters director.
The Teamsters do support the proposal's provision calling for drivers to rest for 10 hours between routes, compared to the current eight.
