As California Gov. Gray Davis met with Mexican President Vicente Fox Monday, Davis called for speedier crossings at the border between California and Mexico.

According to published reports, Davis said tightened security at the border since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks has been causing problems for truckers trying to get loads across the border, especially produce.
The David administration is proposing several steps to speed the flow of commercial traffic across the border. For instance, they would like to certify truckers who have clean driving and criminal records, allowing them to pass through "fast-track" lanes at border crossings.
One of Davis' cabinet found that a decade ago, Mexico and the United States signed an agreement to build databases of truckers with clean records on both sides of the border, but that database has not been kept up to date.
Another proposal is the increased use of X-ray technology to check cargo.
Officials note that any changes would require federal approval.
