Bridgestone/Firestone Joins SmartWay Partnership
Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire (BFNT) has joined the EPA’s SmartWay Transport Partnership, a national organization to reduce emissions from commercial trucking.
Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire (BFNT) has joined the EPA’s SmartWay Transport Partnership, a national organization to reduce emissions from commercial trucking.
BFNT will contribute to the partnership’s goal to reduce 33 to 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and up to 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxide per year by 2012. Carbon dioxide is the most common greenhouse gas, and nitrogen oxide is an air pollutant that contributes to smog.
"We are proud to be a partner in this worthwhile and important endeavor," said Mark Emkes, BFNT chairman, CEO and president. "At Bridgestone/Firestone, we take our role as a responsible corporate citizen very seriously and we look forward to working with the U.S. EPA to help achieve the partnership’s goals."
BFNT was the first tire company to sign up for the program, which currently has nearly 50 partners with the list growing daily. With more than 200 commercial trucks, BFNT runs one of the country’s top 100 private fleets. The fleet delivers millions of tires across the nation to thousands of tire dealers and company-owned stores.
Over the years, Bridgestone/Firestone has received recognition for its environmental commitments and performance across the nation. EPA has recognized the company’s environmental leadership as a charter member of its National Environmental Performance Track. In addition, the Conservation Fund, the Environmental Federation of Oklahoma, the Iowa Governor’s Office, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, the Tennessee Conservation League, and the National Geographic/Eastman Kodak Company/Conservation Fund have recently bestowed their respective environmental awards to Bridgestone/Firestone.
EPA launched the SmartWay Transport Partnership in January 2003 to demonstrate that participants can save money on fuel and operating costs and help the environment at the same time.
