Ashville, N.C.-based Brake Sentry is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the launch of its BrakeSentry kit, a brake stroke monitoring device, this month.

The device is meant to improve vehicle safety and reduce maintenance costs.

Founder Daniel Judson developed the BrakeSentry to provide drivers and technicians with a quick and effective means to visually inspect and identify any brake out-of-adjustment conditions for prompt correction before they are cited at a roadside inspection or become a contributing factor in a costly accident.

Under the proposed CSA 2010 Behavior Analysis & Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs), brake-out-of-adjustment violations will be one of the top 10 equipment violations affecting a fleet's safety score. As drivers' pre-trip inspections will become especially critical, fleets equipped with visual brake stroke indicators will have an important advantage in reducing violations that directly affect their safety score.

In addition to improving safety and compliance, the use of BrakeSentry reduces vehicle preventive maintenance time and cost, the company says.

"On average, it takes about 25 minutes to inspect brake stroke adjustment on a vehicle without BrakeSentry," Judson said. "With BrakeSentry it takes less than 5 minutes, so not only is your fleet safer, you're also saving money."
