Dempsey was born Oct. 18, 1927. He served in the U.S. Army in his younger years.
Dempsey, along with brothers Cecil and Hilly, began driving trucks in 1946. He and his brothers founded Boyd Bros. Transportation in 1956.
In 1965, his brothers left the company, leaving Dempsey as the leader of what today is one of the largest flatbed carriers in the country. He has remained an integral part of the company since his retirement.
Dempsey served as chairman of the board of the Alabama Trucking Association in 1983 and was the recipient of the H. Chester Webb Award in 1987.
