Legislation signed by Gov. Jack Markell requires commercial vehicles registered in Delaware that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 or more to have an audible backup signal. Those that have a backup camera are exempt from the law, which takes effect the first of 2014. Farm vehicles are exempt from the law.
First time violators face a fine of $75 while repeat ones are subject to a $175 fine.
Supporters pushed for the law following the 2009 death of woman who was struck and killed by a delivery truck.
