For the development and commercialized the TrailerTail, a four-foot aerodynamic fairing which streamlines airflow at the back of a tractor-trailer, ATDynamics, Inc. is the recipient of the 2011 Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award.
Presented by California's Governor, Edmund G. Brown, the GEELA Award is California's highest environmental honor recognizing innovative businesses that reduce greenhouse gas emissions while providing significant economic benefits.
Founded by CleanTech entrepreneur Andrew Smith, ATDynamics launched its first TrailerTail in 2008. The company says thousands of TrailerTails were ordered by trucking fleets 2011 and they expect to equip over 50,000 semi-trailers with TrailerTails by 2014.
TrailerTail technology has the potential to save the freight industry over $20 billion in diesel fuel costs over the next decade, ATDynamics claims.
"ATDynamics is a true leader by proving that it can support and promote environmental values without sacrificing its business objectives." said Secretary for Environmental Protection Matt Rodriquez. "ATDynamics understands that going green can be a successful economic strategy that can also lead to sustainable growth and development."
"We are honored to receive one of the most prestigious environmental business awards in the country. In a world of 7 billion people and growing energy challenges, we need to reinvent every aspect of our economy, including how we move freight," says Andrew Smith, founder and CEO of ATDynamics. "We would like to share this award with our customers: the trucking companies who have moved quickly to embrace innovation, greater operating profits and environmental stewardship by changing the shape of their trailers."
TrailerTail technology is made in America, EPA SmartWay verified and Department of Transportation approved. In addition to fuel savings, TrailerTail technology provides significant safety benefits to the American public by reducing dangerous spray around tractor-trailers in wet weather, improving trailer stability in high winds and increasing the braking distance between passenger vehicles and trailers. TrailerTails are made of thermoplastic composite panels and collapse effortlessly when trailer doors are opened to access cargo.
