“Anthony has been our Trucker Buddy for the past 14 years and has been 100% committed to being the most amazing trucker buddy to our fourth graders,” they said. “In his letters, he has taught us about the trucking industry, truck safety, and has shared his love of his family with us. He ends all of his letters with an inspirational message, ‘Keep reading and learning.’

According to Dixon and Schimelman, each school year culminates with Spero visiting Hamden Hall. “The children are always eager and excited to meet him after all the months of writing. This year was particularly special it seemed to our children. For example, one child wrote in his letter to Anthony that he had always wanted to meet with a famous truck driver and invited him to sit with him at lunch,” they said. “Anthony speaks with sincerity and with a true interest in listening to the children. We all adore and love Anthony!”

Some students wrote letters to show how much they care for their Trucker Buddy Anthony:

·      “I think Anthony Spero should be the Trucker Buddy of the Month. He is the best person I have ever met and is so dedicated to following his goals and does what’s right.  He is nice and let us sit in his truck and honk his horn!”
·      “Anthony Spero cares about safety and is patient and kind. He is the only truck driver in Connecticut to win nationals twice and encourages us to get good grades. Best of all he is fun!”
·      “Mr. Spero has been trucking for over 30 years and is nice, fun and has been coming to the school for 10 years.  He has won safety awards. This is why I think he should be the Trucker Buddy of the Month.”

Trucker Buddy International, an independent, non-profit 501(c) (3) organization, has helped educate schoolchildren and introduce educators to the trucking industry. The Trucker Buddy program helps to educate and men or schoolchildren via a pen pal relationship between professional truck drivers and children in grades K-8 as supervised by their teachers.
