Industry shipment pickups for November 2009 were down 1 percent from the year ago month, according to new data from the American Moving & Storage Association.
AMSA said the figures showed a significant improvement from the double-digit declines of 2008.

"Shipments billed in November were down by under 10 percent, which is significantly better than the first part of the year," said Linda Bauer Darr, AMSA president and CEO. "Clearly we continue to face a challenging economy, but the November numbers represent a hopeful sign that 2010 will begin to return the market to pre-recession levels."

The figures are in the fall issue of AMSA's Industry Trends, which also reports that while the number of long-distance moving companies dropped 7 percent from 2002, the number of local moving companies (without storage) jumped 17 percent during the same period.
