As Florida gets closer to finishing rebuilding its weigh stations, it has lifted a temporary measure that let empty car carriers and flatbedders bypass the scales.

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Assn. told members that the Florida Department of Motor Carrier Compliance last September issued a memorandum to scale personnel calling for the temporary change to alleviate congestion until construction on most of the new weigh stations was complete. As of July 1, that policy has been reversed. All trucks must again stop at weigh stations in the state.
Florida has been rebuilding scales along Interstates 10, 75 and 95 to include weigh-in-motion scales. New comfort stations at the scales offer 40 parking spaces for truckers to get much-needed sleep and are off-limits to RVs.
