Cars are driving in a trucks-only detour lane in an I-75 construction project in Michigan, and now authorities are thinking about closing the lane.
The Detroit Free Press reports that a motorcyclist died last week after driving around barrels into a closed lane and crashing into a cable used to suspend workers doing work underneath the bridge. That accident and others may force state officials to close a lane set up for trucks headed to the Ambassador Bridge.
The portion of northbound I-75 south of Detroit was closed earlier this month and will be until November. The closure is from Goddard Road in Southgate to the Rouge River Bridge in Detroit. One lane of southbound I-75 is dedicated for northbound commercial vehicles heading toward the bridge crossing to Canada.
Truckers and others have complained that passenger car drivers have been ignoring signs and driving in the trucks-only lane. But the signs don’t carry the force of law, so drivers can’t be ticketed. The lane was made trucks-only both to make it easier for truckers and to keep trucks off the posted detour, which takes drivers onto three highways before returning to I-75.
