Mack Honored for 125 Years of Transportation History

Mack Trucks marked its 125th anniversary with a Milestone Award from the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, recognizing more than a century of manufacturing and innovation.

Mack Trucks has received a Milestone Award from the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce in recognition of its 125th anniversary, which the company will mark in 2025. The award was presented at the Chamber’s annual meeting at Windham Creek Resort in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Founded in a Brooklyn workshop by two brothers, Mack has since grown into a global truck manufacturer and has played a role in major construction projects, including the Hoover Dam. The company continues to develop new technologies for the heavy-duty market.

“Mack is honored to receive this Milestone Award,” said Stephen Roy, president of Mack Trucks. “Our Class 8 models are assembled in the Lehigh Valley, and the support of the Chamber, the community, and our employees made this milestone possible.”

All Class 8 Mack trucks for North America are produced at the Lehigh Valley Operations (LVO) facility in Macungie, Pennsylvania. Its Class 6–7 trucks are built at Roanoke Valley Operations (RVO) in Salem, Virginia.

Frank Facchiano, chief operating officer and executive vice president of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, said Mack’s presence in the region spans more than a century and continues to contribute to local economic growth.

A Century of Engineering Advances

Mack’s history includes several key technology milestones that have shaped heavy-duty trucking:

  • 1920s: Early adoption of integrated powertrains combining engines, transmissions, and axles.

  • 1930s: Introduction of power brakes and power-assisted steering.

  • 1953: Launch of the Thermodyne engine, improving power and efficiency.

  • 1967: Release of the Maxidyne engine, known for high-torque rise and constant horsepower.

  • 1979: Introduction of the Econodyne engine for improved fuel economy.

  • 1980s: Development of the RS and RL models.

  • 1988: Launch of the CH model.

  • 2010: Introduction of the mDRIVE automated manual transmission.

  • 2016: Addition of the mDRIVE HD 13-speed with low-reduction creeper gear ratios.

  • 2022: Debut of the LR Electric refuse truck with zero tailpipe emissions.

  • 2023: Expansion of the battery-electric lineup with the MD Electric medium-duty model.
