Experiencing the Latest Zero-Emission Trucks [Photos]

The 2023 edition of ACT Expo in Anaheim featured more than 20 trucks for attendees to try out. Some had chauffeurs, others were open. The course was just under 2 miles, providing a decent opportunity to get a feel for the truck. There were more fuel cell trucks in the lineup this year than last, and a good crop of battery-electric pickup-and-delivery trucks. 

There were more than 20 trucks in the ACT Expo ride-and-drive.

Hyliion’s ERX natural gas powered range extender tractor boasts a range of up to 1,000 miles and up to 75 emissions-free miles on batteries alone.

International’s eMV Series Class 6 truck offers batteries up to 210kWh, a 335-hp motor, and an estimated range of 135 miles.

The Class 5-6 W56 from Workhorse offers 1,000+ cubic feet of cargo capacity, 10,000 lb. payload, and up to 150 miles from a 210-kWh battery.

Conspicuously absent from ACT Expo, again — and every other trucking industry trade show in recent memory — was Tesla’s phantom Semi.

Nikola’s battery-electric Tre is available with an estimated range of 330 miles from a 733 kWh battery pack the company claims will charge to 80% in 90 minutes.

The Class 5/6 K270E from Kenworth comes with two battery pack options, 141 kWh and 282 kWh for ranges of 100 and 200 miles respectively. Motor options include 355 hp and 469 hp.

Kenworth’s first fuel cell powered Class 8 is built on the T680 platform and powered by Toyota’s Gen 2 Dual Fuel Cell Module. The company claims a range of up to 450 miles from 58.8 kgs (130 lbs) of hydrogen.

The Class 5 Hino M5e uses SEA Electric’s SEA-Drive power system. It offers a battery capacity of 138 kWh. The company has not yet published range estimates.

Rizon, the newest Daimler Truck brand, is offered in three models and six Class 4/5 configurations. Battery capacities range from 82 to 123 kWh, with ranges from 110 to 160 miles.

General Motors’ BrightDrop Zevo 600 offers 600-plus cubic feet of cargo space. It’s powered by GM’s Ultium Battery Platform. The estimated range on a full charge is said to be 250 miles.

Peterbilt’s Model 579EV has an expected range of 150 miles following a three-hour charge time. It’s powered by Meritor’s 14Xe e-axle and uses thermally controlled lithium-iron-phosphate battery packs.

Peterbilt’s Class 6/7 220EV is designed for P&D and regional applications. It offers three battery configurations, 141-, 209-, and 282-kWh for ranges of 100, 150, or 200 miles.

Hyundai’s Xcient 6x4 fuel cell powered tractor holds 151 pounds of compressed hydrogen gas at over 10,000 psi. It’s powered by two 121-hp fuel cell stacks for a total of 483 hp.

Daimler Truck North America’s Class 6/7 eM2 boasts a range of up to 250 miles from a 291-kWh battery pack, or 194 miles from the smaller 194-kWh pack, all part of the Detroit ePowertrain.

The Class 5/6 MT50e from Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp. features the Proterra Battery System. It fully charges in three hours and provides a range of up to 170 miles.

Cummins is not getting into the truck building business but is using this Peterbilt 220EV chassis to promote its new Accelera brand. It’s a division of Cummins focused on reduced and zero-emissions products to power commercial vehicles.

The X15N, 15-liter natural gas engine from Cummins was fitted into a Walmart tractor for the ride and drive demo. This was not a Daimler-engineered truck. Cummins and Walmart completed the installation in Columbus, Indiana, and drove the trucks to ACT Expo in Anaheim.

The Gen3 8TT from BYD offers up to 200 miles when the 563-kWh LFP battery is fully charged. It’s promoted as well suited to regional haul and drayage operations.

Lion Electric was on hand with its all-electric Class 6 Lion6 truck that is ePTO capable of powering body applications such as refrigeration units.
