As of Wednesday, Virginia’s electronic toll collection system Smart Tag is now part of the E-ZPass network, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Smart Tags will work from Virginia to Massachusetts. Out of state E-ZPass holders will be able to travel Virginia toll roads as facilities are brought on line.
Smart Tag users do not have to make any changes to use E-ZPass toll roads. Motorists who have both Smart Tag and E-ZPass transponders need to remove one of them to avoid charges to both accounts. However, the agency said that Smart Tag commercial vehicles with dual wheels, more than two axles and weighing more than 7,000 pounds that travel to New York need to exchange their white Smart Tag transponder for a blue one because motor carriers in New York are required to have blue ones.
E-ZPass is accepted in West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts. It will be accepted in Illinois, New Hampshire and Maine next year.
The following toll roads in Virginia now accept EZ-Pass:

In Northern Virginia:
Dulles Toll Road
Dulles Greenway

In Hampton Roads:
Coleman Bridge
Chesapeake Expressway

In Chesterfield County:
Powhite Parkway Extension

Richmond Metropolitan Authority toll roads and the privately owned Pocahontas Parkway (Route 895) in the Richmond region will accept EZ-Pass at a later date. Motorists can continue to use their Smart Tags on those facilities.

The Richmond Metropolitan Authority operates the Downtown Expressway, Boulevard Bridge and Powhite Parkway.
