U.S. Rep Wants Trucks Off Orlando Interstates

U.S. Rep. John Mica is urging Florida officials to ban trucks from Interstates 4 and 95 in the Orlando area during rush hours.

According to The Orlando Sentinel, Mica, a member of the House Transportation Committee, wants officials to look at routing truck traffic onto the Central Florida GreeneWay around Orlando, as well as lowering the speed limit for trucks, restricting them to certain lanes, and tightening driver licensing requirements.
“I have a whole list of options,” Mica told the paper, “and I want to explore every one.”
Mica’s actions come in the wake of a number of truck wrecks on the interstates that paralyzed traffic. On I-4, truck wrecks rose almost 44 percent from 1995 to 1999, the most recent year for which data were available.
The paper suggested that Mica is targeting truckers in order to court votes as he faces a tough re-election battle this year.
State transportation officials told the paper that some of his proposals might not work for the area. For example, they said, some studies suggest that different speeds for cars and trucks may cause more problems than they solve. And restricting trucks to right-hand lanes can cause problems when there are left-hand exits, as well as causing problems for other drivers merging onto the interstate.
