A group of national leaders will meet in April to discuss improving the safety of large trucks and buses on America's roads.

The International Large Truck and Bus Safety Research and Policy Symposium, sponsored by the National Safety Council and The University of Tennessee Center for Transportation Research, will be held in Knoxville, Tenn., on April 3-5.
The symposium will bring together more than 400 practitioners, researchers and top government officials to discuss the latest research and to develop recommendations for new policy affecting truck and bus safety and security.
This 2-1/2 day symposium will include targeted survey analysis and the latest research. Research papers and group discussions will center on Driver Issues, Data Analysis, Management Issues, New Technology, and Enforcement Issues. In addition, security initiatives and their impact on these topics will be discussed.
Invited speakers include Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta, National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Marion Blakey, FMCSA Administrator Joseph Clapp, American Trucking Associations Chairman Michael Wickam, Teamsters President James P. Hoffa, ATA President William Canary, Owner Operator Independent Drivers Assn. President Jim Johnston, as well as enforcement officials, bus industry representatives, and safety advocates.
Each participant will be actively involved in reviewing the research, discussing the operational implications and developing recommendations that could lead to new policies. Exhibits and receptions will provide opportunities to meet and network with leaders who share an interest in truck and bus safety.
The symposium will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Knoxville. To register and obtain information on fees and hotel rates, call 865-974-5255 or visit the website http://ctr.utk.edu/ts/trucksym.htm.
