Rip Griffin Truck Service Centers, Lubbock, Texas, and Truckstop.net announced an agreement to offer high-speed wireless access points at all of their 14 travel centers
and three affiliated truck services facilities across the Southwest.
Access points will use the popular 802.11 wireless technology commonly referred to as wi-fi. Sites where wireless services are available are commonly called “hotspots.”
Wi-fi enables computer users to access the Internet over a wireless connection after buying an hourly, daily or monthly subscription. Users must have a computer with wireless capability. In most cases, that means a laptop with a wireless network card.
According to Rip Griffin, Sprint will manage installation and maintenance of all the equipment and deliver high-speed access through its nationwide backbone network.
“Wi-fi is one of the major keys to the future of the transportation industry. The services we are looking at offering are extensive and have many benefits to the trucking community and other travelers,” said Mark Griffin. “Truckers and travelers will be able to maintain real time communication with their customers, dispatchers, family and because of the high-speed Internet, we will offer never before available services at our locations such as video on demand. Additional retail sales will include offering hardware to travelers such as laptops, PCs and wireless network cards.”
