More than 80 million people in the United States belong to some 10,000 credit unions. While it’s not a common driver benefit, trucking companies of all sizes are offering credit unions as a perk for their drivers or owner-operators.
In the August issue of RoadStar magazine, Senior Editor Deborah Lockridge offers the scoop on what to consider if you’re looking at a company that offers credit union access, including what a credit union is, services offered, and the pros and cons of these bank alternatives.
One of the big advantages of being a credit union member is that you’re not just another number. For truckers who are too often a faceless stereotype to shippers, receivers, and even the companies they work for, this can be a priceless thing.
At FFE’s Cornerstone Credit Union, for example, one of the fleet coordinators is the chairman, and one of the company’s independent contractors is on the board of directors. “When you call, you don’t get lost in punching the buttons on the telephone,” says Dave Edner, who is on the board.
