For the second year in a row, the Knights of the Road Foundation is organizing a parade through downtown Norfolk, VA, to honor truck drivers who lose their lives on the highways.

The parade will start at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23. Drivers who want to participate can meet at Big Charlie's truckstop on Route 13 in Virginia Beach, VA, between 7 and 7:30 a.m., or at Harbor Park at 8 a.m. Several of the tractor-trailers will feature flatbed floats.
The Knights of the Road says that truck driving is one of the most dangerous occupations, even more dangerous than police officers. The group says there were more than 600 truck driver fatalities in 1997, with slightly fewer in 1998.
Knights of the Road will also be hosting the 1999 East Coast Truck Rodeo and Jamboree Halloween Bash at Big Charlie's Truck Plaza Saturday, Oct. 30. Tickets are $20, and include a concert by Marty Stuart, a truck beauty contest, costume contest. Lil' Miss Knights of the Road Beauty Pageant, local bands, a carnival, flea market, etc.
Proceeds from the event will go to the Knights of the Road Foundation, which provides assistance to families of truckers who have died or been disabled, and works to educate the general public about driving around large trucks and the sacrifices of truck drivers.
