EPA Certifies Mack Engines For October '02
Mack Trucks this week received certification from the Environmental Protection Agency that its on-highway ASET engines meet the October 2002 emissions standards
Mack Trucks this week received certification from the Environmental Protection Agency that its on-highway ASET engines meet the October 2002 emissions standards.
Mack had earlier received EPA certification for the vocational version of its new engines.
Mack is using different approaches for its on-highway and vocational engine lines in meeting the tough new regulations. For highway tractors, the company will use cooled exhaust gas recirculation (C-EGR) technology. For those engines destined for vocational trucks, internal exhaust gas recirculation (I-EGR) will be employed. (See "Mack Addresses'02 Emissions With "Application-Specific" Solutions," 3/25/02)
"We have said from the beginning that we expected to obtain certification and would be ready by the deadline," says Mack spokesman Bob Martin. "We are clearlyon track to meet the deadline with an engine that will meet customers' expectations as well as the new regulations."
Mack is the second manufacturer to announce it has an October '02-certified engine; Cummins was the first. Caterpillar's ACERT technology won't be ready until 2003, although it is offering a lower-emission engine for this fall.
