W. Dewey Clower has been named President Emeritus of NATSO, according to William D. Fay, NATSO president & CEO.

Fay made the announcement during the NATSO Board of Directors Dinner earlier this month in Orlando, Fla.
"Dewey has been an invaluable mentor throughout my transition to NATSO," Fay said. "His extraordinary leadership, insight and dedication to the association are to be commended."
Clower retired in December after 15 years of service to the association as its president and CEO.
Under Clower's leadership, NATSO jettisoned its government affairs efforts, initiating the NATSO Government Affairs Conference in March 1998.
NATSO also testified before Congress on a number of key issues, including fuel tax evasion and the effects of low-sulfur fuel requirements.
Additionally, NATSO made strides in prohibiting the commercialization of interstate rest areas.
In 1990, The American Truck Stop Foundation -- later renamed The NATSO Foundation - was born to advance the research, education and public outreach efforts of the industry. Shortly after its inception, the foundation partnered with the American Red Cross where association members agree to assist victims affected by disasters.
Under Clower's guidance, the foundation also released several landmark studies, including Fueling American Prosperity: The Economic Significance of Interstate Businesses, which serves as a critical weapon against attempts to commercialize rest areas.
Additionally, in 2000, the foundation won the Federal Highway Administration's contract to study truck parking as mandated by the Transportation Equity Act of the 21st Century.
Clower is the first to be named president emeritus in the association's history.
NATSO is the professional association of America's $42 billion travel plaza and truckstop industry. Founded in 1960, NATSO represents the industry on legislative and regulatory matters; serves as the official source of information on the diverse travel plaza and truckstop industry; provides education to its members; conducts an annual convention and trade show; and supports efforts to generally improve the business climate in which its members operate.
