America On Wheels, a new transportation museum, has moved its headquarters to 5 North Front St, in downtown Allentown, Pa., about 20 minutes from the Lehigh Valley interchange of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

The site is a former meat packing plant. A 43,000-square-foot addition for the museum’s displays will be built starting this summer with a goal of opening in April 2006.
Carroll Cook, executive director, said the museum will focus on highway transportation, from bicycles to trucks to hybrid-powered vehicles. He said it will have three main galleries.
One will house Mack Trucks’ historic collection and archives; another will focus on the development of hybrid vehicles and the hydrogen fuel cell; the third will have changing exhibits with emphasis on the development of over-the-road transportation.
Cost of America on Wheels is estimated at $14-million with funding coming from both private and public sources. The American Truck Foundation has pledged a gift of $3-million to start an endowment fund for the museum. John B. Curcio, retired CEO of Mack Trucks, is chairman of the museum’s board of directors. America on Wheels is a 501c(3) tax-exempt organization.
