WABCO introduced its enhanced Electronic Braking System for trailers – the Trailer EBS E generation – offering a high level of integration that paves the way for simpler trailer braking.

A new robust connector helps the system withstand the harsh demands of a trailer’s daily life, while fewer components allow for simpler and faster installation. Fleet operators also benefit from improved reliability, enhanced trailer management functions and reduced maintenance costs.
Trailer EBS E will be available in two versions – standard and premium – each prepared for upgrade with the new Extension Module. WABCO’s concepts for trailers were on display at last week’s IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hanover, Germany.
Nick Rens, WABCO vice president of trailer systems, said, “We have integrated additional trailer features, such as Electronically Controlled Air Suspension (ECAS) in the premium Trailer EBS modulator. Our comprehensive trailer information functions will make trailer management more economical and contribute to vehicle safety.”
The WABCO Trailer EBS E offers maximum flexibility to trailer builders and their customers. The standard version of the new Trailer EBS E features all the usual EBS functions and comes with Roll Stability Support (RSS) and an advanced Operating Data Recorder (ODR) with extended data storage capacity. The premium version includes ECAS and functions, such as mechanical suspension with height sensor and additional Generic Input/Output (GIO). Both the standard and premium versions can be easily customized to meet individual requirements.
WABCO offers Trailer EBS E with a flange-mounted pneumatic Extension Module. This enables the integration of valves controlling functions, such as overload protection, charging, pressure distribution for air leveling, park- release emergencies, lift axle control, and Trailer Air Suspension Control (TASC), as well as the ports for spring brake actuators.
As a further option, WABCO offers the Trailer EBS E modulator with integrated fittings. This makes installation even more simple – all the manufacturers need to do is to push in the pneumatic tubes.
SmartBoard can be added to the Trailer EBS modulator to provide the fleet manager or driver with a real-time status overview of the braking system and its components. All information on the running conditions of a trailer recorded by the advanced ODR can be monitored per trip and over the vehicle lifetime.
All data is stored with an exact time stamp. The icon-orientated display allows easy and simple handling. SmartBoard offers nine different languages to display mileage, axle load, lining wear indication, and tire conditions. A warning lamp informs the driver of messages like a lack of tire pressure or overload. Combined with ECAS, SmartBoard also serves as a control box for lifting and lowering the chassis and for the lift axle.
WABCO’s new TASC valve combines improved trailer safety with simpler, more effective control than is possible with the more conventional rotary slide valve. Drivers who operate trailers equipped with the TASC valve do not need to hold the lever throughout the lifting or lowering process. When a vehicle fitted with TASC starts to move after loading or unloading, suspension automatically returns to the safe driving level without the need for driver intervention. The risk of an overstressed chassis is entirely eliminated and damage is avoided.
