Freightliner plans to shut down three of its North American truck plants for a week next month to cut inventories.

According to published reports, beginning Oct. 22, plants in Portland, Ore., Cleveland, N.C., and St. Thomas, Ontario, will be temporarily closed. The move will affect more than 4,000 employees.
In order to keep its two Portland, Ore, plants open, Freightliner reportedly has asked its union workers to take a pay cut and other concessions, according to The Oregonian.
Freightliner is scheduled to unveil restructuring plans next month to help the struggling truck maker, the largest in North America.
