Cummins' All-Electric Tractor Prototype

Employees at the Cummins Technology Center in Columbus, Indiana, anxiously await the official unvieling of the company's first electric-powertrain heavy-duty tractor.

Cummins executives struggled to liftt he cover on the truck before a cloudburst seriously dampened the event – but not the enthusiasm.

The truck is a 4x2 daycab tractor with full battery electric power producing zero tailpipe emissions.

The technology demonstrator will find a home in vocational applications such as urban delivery operations, port drayage and terminal container handling.

Acceleration is said to be 25-35% faster than a 11L- to 12L-powered equivalent vehicle (rear axle ratio dependent).

The truck gets over 30 mpg diesel equivalent with a range of 100 miles on a single charge, extendable to 300 miles with an additional battery pack.

GVWR: Max. 75,000 lbs with a tractor weight of 18,000 lbs, leaving room for a payload of 44,000 lbs.
