Select International, Pittsburgh, has introduced RoadWorthy, a remote assessment that provides intelligent decision support for driver selection.

The company is a global provider of expert systems that include assessment products and recruitment process outsourcing. RoadWorthy draws upon the company's comprehensive library of validated selection data and is designed specifically to assess commercial driver candidates across a range of attributes known to be crucial to safety, reliability and performance.

Select International will conduct an official product rollout at The American Trucking Associations Management Conference and Exhibition, Oct. 4-7 in New Orleans.

Select International's RoadWorthy is a predictive analysis tool that transportation carriers can deploy when they are considering candidates for driver positions. The assessment captures important psychometric information about a candidate's attributes, including driving habits, risk assessment capabilities and other key competencies necessary to performing as a safe, reliable and efficient commercial driver. RoadWorthy then collates the applicant's response data and provides the trucking firm with a recommendation on whether the candidate should progress to the next stage of the selection process. The solution is capable of assessing many different types of drivers - long-haul, short-haul and delivery drivers.

While RoadWorthy is a Web-based assessment, applicants without computer access will be able to use a telephone-based interactive voice response system, which is currently being developed by Select.

Leading this product launch is Glynn Spangenberg, senior vice president of Select International, who has nearly 25 years of executive business operations experience in the transportation and logistics industry. Prior to joining Select, Spangenberg served as vice president and general manager at Qualcomm.

In developing RoadWorthy, Select International has also drawn upon the expertise of Winfred Arthur, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Industrial & Organizational Psychology at Texas A&M University and a recognized industry expert on human safety factors.

"The trucking industry has been experiencing a profound shortage of truck drivers. The industry is tapping into a pool of nontraditional candidates like never before, and assessing them to evaluate risk factors is more crucial than ever," said Arthur. "Transport carriers urgently need to seat drivers, but making unsound hiring decisions will lead to poor economic performance and sometimes catastrophic consequences for both the carrier and the public at large. Assessing commercial driver candidates prior to employment can lead to dramatic improvements in both safety and performance. It is just that predictable."
