Looking back at Volvo's Enhanced Cruise Control, first launched in 2009 and improved in 2012, this system brought adaptive cruise control to the next level for trucks. It used radar to monitor traffic ahead, adjusting speed automatically by reducing throttle, engaging engine brakes, or applying foundation brakes.
In 2012, Volvo added active braking, giving trucks up to two-thirds braking power even without cruise engaged. With features like following distance alerts and automatic collision prevention, it’s a great example of early safety tech that made a real impact on fleet safety.
