Fruehauf North America has opened a $15 million dry van assembly operation in Bowling Green, Kentucky, signifying the company’s return to production in the United States.
The 32-foot insulated van, built in 1950 like its companion Mack LFT tractor, “has all the interior and floor required to make it a refrigerated trailer by adding a cooling unit,” an informational placard says.
Trailers were loaded with panels and hardware as they left the assembly line, then hauled to their destinations. At building sites, parts that were needed first had been loaded last, so they came off in the exact order required for erection.
Fruehauf, as a blacksmith, noted that horses that pulled rather than carried loads were in better shape. He reasoned that trucks would likewise last longer if they towed rather than toted loads.
Vintage ads help Ruth Ann Fruehauf, granddaughter of the founder of Fruehauf Trailer Corp., tell how the company designed and built trailers for many uses.
Ruth Fruehauf continues her "Singing Wheels" efforts to preserve the trailer builder's history. Enthusiasts are invited to the event, honoring the long-gone company and its people.
