2015 HDT Fact Book: Drivers


The percentages of women and minorities in the truck driver workforce today are higher than they have ever been.

Private fleets have traditionally enjoyed much lower turnover than on-highway for-hire carriers, but even that number has been increasing in recent years, reflecting the broad-based driver shortage.

Miles and compensation is a more significant reason for owner-operators to leave a company than it is for company drivers, according to exit interviews and follow-up interviews done by Strategic Programs Inc.

Extensive exit interviews and follow up interviews done by Strategic Programs Inc. show that while pay and miles may be the top reason for company drivers to quit, other reasons actually account for about two-thirds.

Annualized turnover rates at large and small truckload fleets fell by 12 percentage points in the first quarter of 2015, according to the American Trucking Associations, but it expects turnover to edge higher later in the year. (Large truckload fleets are defined as those with more than $30 million in revenue.)

Fewer fleets surveyed by CK Commercial Vehicle Research were affected by the driver shortage in the first quarter, but more are expecting it to affect them in the future.
