Marijuana by far outpaced other substances identified in positive drug tests reported to the FMCSA's Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse the first six months of 2020, with 12,867 positives. The next highest was cocaine at 3,868, with positives for amphetamine and methamphetamine around 2,500 each.

Private fleets reported a DOT Recordable crash rate of 0.54 accidents per million miles in the National Private Truck Council's 2020 survey, an incremental increase over last year’s reported average of 0.50 accidents per million miles per million miles and the 0.49 recorded the previous year. This crash rate is roughly three times better than the industry average, according to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration officials, although the agency does not report an industry average crash rate for all motor carriers.

Among drivers and pedestrians killed in crashes in 2018, drivers of large trucks had the lowest proportion of blood alcohol contents at or above 0.08% (3%) and pedestrians ages 16 and older (not included in chart) had the highest proportion at 33%. For the past five years, large truck drivers have remained at 3% of total deaths, with the estimated number of deaths ranging from 16 to 29.
