DaimlerChrysler AG's Freightliner unit, one of the world's biggest heavy-truck makers, will fire about 675 workers and shut two plants for eight days
as demand slows.
The unit will close two North Carolina plants in January and fire temporary and permanent workers in Cleveland and at a truck plant in St. Thomas, Ontario, in the first quarter of 2003, spokesman Chris Brandt said. More temporary shutdowns are expected in February and March, the company said.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that truck orders are falling because transportation companies have already stocked up on vehicles with engines meeting the previous U.S. pollution rules because of concerns about the new engines' cost and reliability.
