If the Canadian government has its way, heavy trucks will no longer be allowed in the left hand lane of some highways.

The Canadian legislature wants to ban tractor-trailers from the passing lane of the country’s 400-series highways. The Canadian trucking industry calls the bill, which passed second reading in the legislature Thursday, "impractical."
If passed, the Act to Improve Safety on 400 Series highways would amend the Highway Traffic Act to prevent heavy trucks from traveling in the far left lane of any 400 series highway except when the right lane is obstructed. Frank Mazzilli, who introduced the bill, says it will make highways safer in Ontario, the country's most populous province.
