The permanent replacement for the collapsed Interstate 5 Skagit River Bridge span reached a major milestone this week as crews began setting eight enormous concrete girders that will support the new roadway.

New Pilot Flying J Lawsuits Continue Despite Settlement

While truckstop giant Pilot Flying J has reached a tentative settlement over claims it bilked trucking customers out of money due to them in the form of rebates from fuel purchases, it appears to have had little effect in stopping increasing litigation.

Detroit Diesel Remanufacturing to Expand Minnesota Operations

The new building offers 30,000 square feet of production space, and Detroit Reman plans to double that with an addition slated to open in 2015.

Detroit Diesel Remanufacturing LLC will expand its electronics remanufacturing and manufacturing capabilities with a move to a larger facility in Hibbing, Minn., which is about 75 miles north of Duluth, Minn.

Freight Shipments Fell 0.2% in June from May

The amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry fell 0.2% in June from May, declining after a one month increase, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ Freight Transportation Services Index.

Final Statistics Reveal I-80 Challenge Makes Strong Impact

The eleven states from California to New Jersey dedicated nearly 23,000 enforcement hours to the I-80 Challenge. The officers working along I-80 removed 162 impaired drivers from the road, and issued 14,274 traffic citations and 9,411 warnings to passenger vehicle drivers. Additionally, 1,711 citations and 2,978 warnings were issued to commercial motor vehicle drivers.

FMCSA Stands by Oilfield HOS Guidance, Seeks Comments on Other Exemptions

An hours-of-service guidance for oilfield haulers will remain as it is, although the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said it is open to applications for individual exceptions. In other HOS news, the agency is looking for comments on exempting munitions and livestock haulers from the 30-minute break requirement.
