Trailer orders in September were 32% better than August, with net number of 32,111 units ordered for the month, according to a new report by FTR. Compared with September of last year, orders are up 80%.

The growth exceeded the predicted seasonal increase due to a stronger trailer market overall and orders being booked for 2015 in anticipation of production constraints. Dry van trailers were the strongest segment but other trailers showed improved numbers as well.

“September orders at the larger OEMs reflect their increasing capacity constraints, which are recognized by the larger fleets,” said Don Ake, FTR vice president of commercial vehicles. “To firm up their requirements for all of 2015 those fleets have started placing large orders now.”

Because the orders are spread out across 2015, there should not be much additional stress on production rates, says Ake.
