In testing against competitor engines, the new four-cylinder, 5.1-liter DD5 offers 3% better fuel economy, according to the company.

Durability and reliability were a major focus of designers and the engine boasts a B10 life of 400,000 miles.

Although the base engine has been produced in Europe for three years, it was customized for North America and for the M2 106.

Kary Schaefer, general manager of sales and marketing for DTNA, left, and Richard Howard, senior VP of sales and marketing, talk to reporters.

The engine will first be offered in 210 hp, 575 lb-ft and 230 hp, 660 lb-ft ratings.

The DD5 initially will be targeted at the pickup and delivery market, available in the Freightliner M2 106 truck.

Much of the customization of the engine for the M2 106 had to do with noise and vibration characteristics, including the black box you see on the left.

Cartridge-style fuel and oil filters are mounted above the rail for easy access.
